Department for Business Champions Innovation
The Government has recently published an important report on
Innovation.
The report comes at a critical time for the UK economy and makes some valuable points. Here are some key extracts:
“The more difficult the economic climate, the greater the imperative to have systems which provide the firm with market focus, the ability to
differentiate itself from the competition through innovation, and the
processes to manage scarce resources.”
Spot on! So often when I contact companies, they tell me that innovation is just for the good times. When the climate is tough, they just batten down the hatches! This is the key time to innovate! The opportunities are greater and the players are fewer.
“
There is the opportunity for businesses to respond to the new competitive challenge by looking to innovate in all aspects of their business.”
Yes! Innovation is for
all
parts of the business: looking for better ways to perform, compete, save money, grow sales……..Every part of your business can improve its performance.
“Companies which are successful over time are those which have well
developed processes for…..creating an environment which is open to new ideas, while sifting rigorously those to pursue against clear commercial objectives.”
Not only do companies need a process to generate new ideas, but also a process to find the winners. Lots of ideas from everyone, not just a few from the boss! Innovation has always followed the laws of probability.
“
The above processes require strong leadership and a skilled and motivated workforce.”
A boss who sees the need and is prepared to act on it. A workforce that is trained in the essential skills of innovation and motivated to improve performance – continuously.
This report is actually focused on the service sector – but of course the same issues apply to both service and manufacturing. If you would like to read the report, it can be found at:

(but, beware, it’s 116 pages long!)
